This is “his story” that is now HISTORY.
A Fly in a Pail of Milk, The Herb Carnegie Story
Written by Herb Carnegie with Bernice Carnegie
Publisher – ECW Press
The first edition of my father’s story was published in 1997. I knew he was talented at everything he did but I was totally blown away when I read his story written in his own words. Who would have thought this athlete, businessman and community trailblazer could be an author too?
Because of the easy conversational way he wrote, you can open the book at any page and become engaged with each storyline.
The book is a personal gift for me; but I have come to realize it was also his gift to many others.
““My dad told me about Herb Carnegie when I was young. I read his book during my adolescent years. However, it was after I made the NHL that I really understood his story. Thanks, Mr. Carnegie, for teaching me to make the best of my opportunities and not to be a victim of my circumstance.” - PK SUBBAN
The second edition of A Fly in a Pail of Milk, The Herb Carnegie Story was published in 2019 and now has a Part II – lessons passed on from father to daughter. Prompted by documentary producer Kwame Mason, I revisited my father’s memoirs and discovered I had a story inside me too that revealed how his life influenced mine.
In this version, we have brought the past forward to the present. I share more intimate family stories and have added two new themed colour photo sections. No matter the age or reading ability, you will love it.
Thank you to the ECW Press publishing team that got me to the goal line.
What People Are Saying
“Thank you, Mr. Carnegie, isn’t enough! Being robbed of your dream must have felt futile. It certainly was not! So thank you! Your courage and bravery allowed kids like me to realize my dream to play in the NHL..”
— Jamal Mayers
“All-around excellence and quiet persistence. Look those up in the dictionary and you will find Herb Carnegie’s picture. The hockey career he should have enjoyed was denied him because of the racism of the day. He could have consumed himself with anger and no one would have blamed him. Instead he became a successful businessman, a champion golfer, and a tireless community servant, among many other roles. His greatest legacy though, will be his roadmap to mentorship and personal development of young people . . .”
— John Tory, Mayor of Toronto
“It was about 1980, when Mr. and Mrs. Carnegie walked into my office. For over an hour we talked about Future Aces. They were so committed to the idea and the good it would do that it was inspiring. I watched the program grow and saw the community’s and educators’ acceptance and the role it played in the lives of our youth. Herb Carnegie was a visionary and a fighter for justice and equity. He has left a legacy!.”
— Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine, PC CM CBE
The book launch was a real celebration . . .
The 2019 book launch was full of emotion – joy, tears, and cheers. Held at the Herbert H. Carnegie Public School on the 100th anniversary of my father’s birth, the outpouring of love and goodwill of the more than 400 people who attended was overwhelming.
The Carnegie family wishes to thank the many parents, teachers, students, and community who helped organize this memorable event and came out to support us.
